Privacy

With the growth of new media in modern times, privacy has become a major concern for many. The digital footprints we leave on the internet is something we must be conscientious about. There have been many recent scandals regarding privacy and data breaches in the use such as Facebook. In today's day and age, data mining is a very useful tool used by major corporations that harvests the information we leave online, may it be on social media, or financial accounts, or just using random applications on our phones. Hence, it is important to be aware of what you post and what kind of information you are putting out for companies to use. However, sometimes our privacy is not in our control. When big companies have their data breached, the information of their customers is released. Many companies are working on providing customers with ways of encrypting information so their data is more secure. Hopefully this trend continues, so people can be in control of their own data.

Advice

If Baruch College were to hire me to use new media to improve the college, there are a couple of suggestions I would make. First, I would work on creating a Baruch student and alumni social networking website. This will allow Baruch students to connect outside of school and provide them with valuable information and connections. For example, students will be able to use this to reach out and network with alumni. This would create a strong bond in work relationships and make Baruch's school culture stronger. In addition, I would create a virtual workspace for students, where they will be able to share ideas and collaborate with peers. This will help foster new and creative ideas which students can then bring to fruition. I think these new media will help not only baruch students and alumni, it will allow for new ideas to enter the market. And given that Baruch College is in one of the most innovative city's in the world, it will be easy to bring these ideas to life.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can be used to do things you may have never thought of in real life. For example, in the video "A Second Life on Second Life," the woman is able to do things such as ride horses and walk in the virtual world, meanwhile in real life she is not able to because she has sclerosis. However, while virtual worlds may give people access to things they can't do in real life, it is artificial. While technology has surely advanced in recent decades, with products such as VR and AR, there is still a way to go till it very closely resembles real life. Virtual worlds are also becoming more popular as people have easier access to them. While its not as recent anymore, The Office, which is still a really popular show, talked about the virtual world "Second Life," as seen in the video "Another Day at the SL Office[2007]."
